In April of 1862 one civilian and 21 Union soldiers posing as confederate enlistees hijacked the confederate steam engine "General" and made for union lines in Chattanooga TN with it. The train was eventually recaptured 18 miles from Chattanooga. All 22 were captured, 6 were hanged, 8 managed to escape and 8 more were returned in a prisoner exchange in 1863. The first Medals of honor in US history were issued to a few of them for their courage.
